Anyone who has ever had a look in a restaurant kitchen knows: stainless steel is worked in. This is due to the properties of the material. Sinks and worktops are both durable, beautiful and hygienic. And many amateur chefs are now bringing this convenience into their kitchens.
What are the advantages of stainless steel over wood ?
Stainless steel worktops and sinks combine many features that are important in the kitchen. Of particular importance is that the material is heat resistant. Surfaces can withstand heat up to 300 degrees. They do not change their color or structure by strong sunlight or by placing hot pots on the surface. In addition, stainless steel is hygienic, robust and food safe. This is also demonstrated by the fact that strongly colored fruits such as pomegranate or red litter cannot damage stainless steel surfaces. It is remarkable that this versatile product can be used as a household remedy against garlic smell on the hands. Simply rub wet fingers against the surface and the unpleasant smell disappears.
In addition to the advantages of stainless steel materials, worktops have other advantages. Because stainless steel can be used to create a seamless unit consisting of a sink, cooktop and worktop. This eliminates edges and borders that would be inconvenient when working at the sink. Stainless steel can be used to manufacture custom-made stainless steel worktops and sinks. Whether with flat or curved edges, manufacturing makes a lot of things possible. Also, stainless steel is a very versatile and honest material.
Is it possible to scratch stainless steel ?
Absolute scratch resistance is not possible. But there is no need to worry, the appearance of small traces of use is a completely natural process over time. The first scratch may still be particularly painful, but gradually a certain patina develops. And since the average life of a kitchen is about 15 years, stainless steel generally looks better than most other surfaces.
What kind of surfaces are there ?
A general distinction is made here between brushed and ground surfaces or special finishes. The three stainless steel surfaces differ in their brilliance and the care they require.
- Brushed silky shiny surface
The silky shiny brushed surface is easy to clean and maintain thanks to its smooth structure. That is why it is also the most popular stainless steel surface. Approximately 90% of buyers opt for this glossy version. Because it looks particularly noble and timeless. The first scratches are of course quickly visible. But thanks to its brushed and smooth surface, this stainless steel is easy to clean.
- Brushed matte-silk surface
The brushed version is a little more matt. Due to its slightly rougher surface, it requires more intensive cleaning, but of course it has all the positive properties of a stainless steel surface. What stands out here is the appearance, which looks more modern compared to the glossy surface.
How do you clean stainless steel surfaces properly ?
For daily cleaning of stainless steel sinks or worktops, a soft sponge or a damp microfibre cloth with a wipe of washing-up liquid is sufficient. Limescale stains can be removed with a little vinegar or lemon cleaner. Only strong detergents or abrasive sponges and steel wool should never be used to clean stainless steel materials. They immediately cause scratches. If you are not sure whether the sponge or cleaning agent is suitable for the stainless steel surface, in case of doubt, try it first on a not directly visible stain.
